TikTok dances and trends come and go like the time passed since it launched in 2020. Our job: keep you updated on all things new! For someone who spends endless hours scrolling on TikTok, I stay very much updated with the trends, sounds, and dances going around today. If you ask me, TikTok dances from 2020 are cringy, outdated, and simply boring. Now’s the time for new hits, new eras, and new ways to go all out or just have a little fun.
Catch up on all the new trends before 2023 comes along and you miss out on all the fun!
1. Made You Look
Megan Trainor came back to reclaim her pop crown in her newest hit “Made You Look.” The sound takes the cake for the hottest dance right now to show off your elegant nightgown or your Sunday couch pajamas. You can wear both to do this dance without breaking a sweat (I know Megan did on the Late-Night Show with Jimmy Fallon). With simple head turns and a few arm moves, dancing to this song is chic and easy to rock. By the way, Trainor recently announced that “Made You Look” already made it to the number one song on TikTok.
2. Mr. DJ
In anticipation of Rihanna putting out new music most people revisit her classics and add a little bit of spice to them. TikTok creates a new place where people explore their creativity. The “Mr. DJ” dance is part of a sped-up remix of “Pon de Replay” by Rihanna, but don’t get too nervous about the fast pace beat. Just turn the music up and follow their lead. This dance seems to be more complicated than other trends because of the constant arm and leg movements, but with a few tutorials, you’ll get lots of fun out of it!
3. Super Freaky Girls
The queen of rap, Nikki Minaj, returns with her new single, “Super Freaky Girl” and it has all the barbs running. Like another song from the beginning of TikTok, Doja Cat’s “Say So,” Nikki Minaj did a collaboration that made the internet go wild. This dance usually involves two people, each getting a solo in the TikTok spotlight. The coordination between the two of you can make the video look pro and fun. So, glamour yourself up and let your sass shine through.
4. Cuff It
Speaking of queens, Beyoncé released her new album, Renaissance, earlier this year and everything about it gives goddess vibes. The songs easily deliver an upbeat, savored-in-the-moment groove to enjoy alone or with a group. I recommend a group because the more people, the more to get creative with it. It makes the whole video look full of love and fun. Rave the queen bee once more for this hit song!
5. Unholy
Sam Smith also did a comeback with his new song “Unholy” and people cannot get enough of the sexy vibes or the funny way Smith looks in the video. Some versions of the dance rate PG for an easy and trendy dance, and others rate R for thirst trap enthusiasts. So, work your way up to whatever you feel comfortable with. Practice on your own or grab your bestie to join you. You slay either way!
6. Just Dance
As I said all the oldies are still goodies. These days TikTok dancers popularized old trends by remixing them or making a faster-paced version. Lady Gaga’s classic “Just Dance” found a new purpose as a more challenging and faster-paced dance that I guarantee to get you jumping. This dance gets your heart pumping alone or with a partner backing you up. Just watch your footing and your surroundings, we don’t want your video to include you getting hurt, just having fun!
7. Slim Shady
For the ballerinas good on their toes, you got this! Just follow the beat of the song with the movement of your feet. The dance starts easy and slow, but then get ready to lock down your best moves at the end. Like literally, bust it down! You can have more than one person to bust it down with or battle out who the real slim shady is.
8. Euphoria x Beyoncé
Two icons of our generation came together in this killer remix of Maddie from season two of Euphoria, Beyonce’s “Partition” lyrics, and The Notorious B.I.G song “Big Poppa’s” melody (millennials get this one). In the most recent season of Euphoria, everyone must know the historic fight between Maddie, Casey, and Nate romantic and messed up the triangle. The genius of this remix mashed up the iconic dialogue with an equally iconic song. The dance includes simple moves. Just sway your hands and hips together to the rhythm of the song and you got it down packed.
9. Jiggle Jiggle
You probably heard that guy talking about a song he rapped on another song in an interview. Well, now the interview turned into a rap remix. The song “Jiggle Jiggle” by Duke, Louis Theroux and Jones caught the attention of regular TikTokers and celebrities. The dance defines fresh, funny, and money, in case you didn’t know. TikTok dances are pretty straightforward via the song lyrics, so, just listen and jiggle along.
10. Hit you with the blink
Just an easy peekaboo dance that contains a joke between two friends or more. It could be about your best friend, your parents your enemy, or just your favorite thing to make the joke even funnier or pettier. The dance only consists of a shake of your hips and hands and moving forward and backward once. Then you’ve done it!
11. Hurricane Katrina
A favorite of mine because not only do I spontaneously say it to annoy my boyfriend, but an absolutely hilarious and chaotic dance too. With people, the more the merrier! Everyone has their part in breaking it down for each time it says, “here comes the hurricane” and goes absolutely crazy. This requires you to go all out on your best moves and camera work. If you don’t do the death drop, you did not do it right.
12. Hot n’ cold
Another iconic song and (you guessed it) sped-up remix of Katy Perry’s famous hit “Hot n’ Cold.” The remix matches the fast motions for that upbeat challenge of choreography for any single or pair of dancers. Most of the dances consist of leg jumps and skip movements of your feet or your partners. The direction in the song makes it easier to follow along, switch between movements, and know what’s coming if you memorized this song as we all had in 2013.
13. Chill like that
Chill like Sunday Scaries falling under a swaying-your-hips pop dance straightforward enough for everyone to do, whether in front of your mirror or with your friends. You don’t even need to look fancy to “move like that” and still look like your “chill like that.” Just feel yourself in your own skin and have fun. Also, don’t forget your cool shades and you’ll set.
14. Squirrels. In. My. Pants
Now we all must know this one. Either from growing up with Phineas and Ferb on the Disney Channel or from the various TikTok trends this song brings up. I’ve seen many recreating the actual cartoon dance from the show and I can guarantee you´ll have a fun and wild time following along to Candace’s predicament. You can also freestyle on the new version of the trend. Do some looking around and see which one you’d like! In the newest version, someone stays up close to the camera with their hands closed and on queue “scream!” open them up to reveal the second person dancing in the background.
15. Cure For Me
For the cuties that just like to move their feet, “Cure for Me” by Aurora boosts positive vibes as an easy lil dancey dance to enjoy. You can do it alone or in a group and show off the real you! The best part of TikTok trends? It spreads creative positivity and inspires people to get on board and enjoy even the simplest things.
16. High School Musical
Homecoming and Prom season always approaches so fast. So, if you need some extra dance moves to bust out on the dance floor, you must learn this iconic High School Musical dance from the song “A Night to Remember.” The ladies and the gents could not resist the fun energy this dance brings to the table and it will make everyone want to join in out of nostalgia. You can even make it a sing-along dance-along event for those Highschool Musical lovers and throw the most iconic dance party with friends or by yourself and follow the dances right from your living room.
17. Gimme More
Back again with the 2000’s hits, Brittney Spears’ Gimme More makes a comeback, and surprisingly with no remix or mashup but the classic Brittney bop that never gets old. TikTokers everywhere put their own spin on this dance that seems clean and coordinated with a group of people, but you could also put a little extra spice into your thirst trap with you and your doorframe. The last one does mimic an old trend silhouette door frame trend with Doja Cat’s Street hit song if you need some extra inspiration.
18. Bananaza
I’ve seen the sounds go in a couple of different directions so take your pick! Do as the song says and show off that belly dancing skill you secretly work on in the mirror. Take it upon yourself to choose a coordinated dance for you and a partner to either pop to it or drop to it in a faster version of the song or just bump it yourself with the original sound if a slower pace seems more like you. Find multiple fun ways to incorporate your own style into the dance while, of course, absorbing the fun of it!
19. Teach Me
Dance fight or a real dance? Well, you can do both on TikTok. This can be considered a role-playing dance as a fun joke or activity. Grab a person and make them chase you and try to touch you with an object. It can be an inside joke like perhaps something that you don’t like and avoid it, portray a funny or fake scary situation, or just use anything you want. Try to keep cool and avoid that object with funny bends or twists during the chill beat of the song. You can find lots of fun examples from locals and people across the globe. Another great thing about TikTok: it connects people far and wide with just a fun challenge or song!
20. I’m Up
This duet dance takes some skill and spinning so be careful not to get too dizzy. The sound has a simple beat from Sundown, I’m Up – Sped up & Pitches – by Lil Yawh. The dancers have all the space to hop, twist and spin, and the coordination between the two people creates a great rhythm. I’ve seen it done in the synchronization of opposite movements that come together or doing the same spin and then your own move, making it a cute dance together!
