Rewatching old favorites can be fun, but with limited time we get stuck in cycles of the same shows and movies. Finding new movies takes time, our precious commodity of which we can never have enough. Fear not, I did the heavy lifting for you. Check out what’s hot to watch this week.
To help us discover the most up-and-coming shows, we’re working with Moviefone, the destination for entertainment fans to find what they want to watch and where to watch it. 1. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (Digital)
The Mission Impossible movies have been around for a while, but unlike most long-running film series they just keep getting better. Rogue Nation is the latest in the series, providing even more over-the-top action and cheesy humor than previous installments as the hunters become the hunted. With a star-studded cast from Tom Cruise to Simon Pegg to Jeremy Renner, this non-stop movie will give you and your friends more than enough thrills to get your adrenaline pumping. And yes, Tom Cruise does that insane plane stunt himself.
2. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (DVD, Blu-Ray, Digital)
This action comedy follows classic spies in the 60’s. Based on the 1964 show created in part by Ian Fleming, writer of the James Bond series, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a spy film that deviates from the slow narrative and heavy-handed politics of others in the genre. Described by some as the movie version of Archer, it has more than enough suave spies, hilarious jokes and sexy women to make it a surefire hit. Boasting a talented (not to mention gorgeous) main cast including Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) and Armie Hammer (The Social Network), I don’t think you could find a better new flick for a movie night with roommates.
3. Ant-Man (Digital)
The Marvel Cinematic Universe just keeps getting bigger, though this hero is meant to do just the opposite. Ant-Man was one of the Avengers fans joked was missing from the lineup when The Avengers first came out, but Marvel had some serious plans for this shrinking hero. He may not be everyone’s favorite hero, but this movie has enough Marvel-style action and humor to please any superhero fan. It stars Paul Rudd for heaven’s sake, so you better believe it’s going to be funny. Ant-Man introduces an integral new character to the MCU, so you don’t want to miss out on this marvelous movie.
4. Marvel’s Jessica Jones (Netflix)
Following Daredevil as Marvel’s second Netflix show, Jessica Jones will surely live up to its predecessor. Don’t expect the lighthearted humor of the Marvel films, however, because Jessica Jones is a much darker addition to the MCU. If you’re looking for a gritty, noir-style action show with a strong female protagonist, look no further. The show stars Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) and is going to tackle difficult topics from assault to PTSD. Oh, and did I mention the talented David Tennant (Doctor Who) plays the mind-controlling villain? The show is sure to be spectacular and drops on Netflix this Friday. Right in time for date night (*cough cough* Netflix and chill).
5. River (Netflix)
Almost every cop on TV is haunted by their past, but only River is tormented by actual manifestations of unsolved crimes. River is a six-part television drama from the impeccable BBC One. The series explores the thin line between genius and insanity. The BBC has a phenomenal track record when it comes to these sort of short drama series, with shows such as Luther, Line of Duty and Wallander. These BBC dramas have a reputation for being tragically honest and wonderfully written, and I can only imagine this series follows that trend. It stars Stellan Skarsgård who is famous for far too many amazing things to list here. The show comes to Netflix this Wednesday, so feel free to take a midweek break to watch an episode or six.
