Ahhhh, football. After a long and grueling hiatus it is back and I couldn’t be happier. It was just opening weekend, but it was a start to what promises to be yet another riveting college football season (as always). So, without further ado, here are some of the things we learned from week one:
Tide continues to Roll
This year’s most anticipated non-conference game between Alabama and Michigan turned out to be the SEC flexing its guns once again. Under Jerry’s big TV, the Tide trounced Michigan by a score of 41-14 and that score may have been deceiving. If not for one huge pass play, ‘Bama would have totally bottled up Denard Robinson, one of the nation’s premier QBs. The Tide’s Running Backs looked solid and A.J. McCarron looked poised under center. Watch out, nation … ‘Bama is back.
Bobcats play spoiler
Perhaps the most intriguing game of the weekend was the Penn State – Ohio matchup after all that went on in State College over the past ten months. Even though the Nittany Lions cannot make a bowl game, 100,000 State faithful flocked Beaver Stadium to support a team that still means so much to the community. But it was not meant to be. The Bobcats came in to Happy Valley and stole a win on the most significant of days, 24-14.
The obvious: Uniforms
College football seems to be more about the unis than anything these days and without a doubt the team whose garments stole the show in week one was, you guessed it, Oregon. The Ducks were clad in Kelly Green and yellow jerseys with yellow and chrome feather helmets. Of course, you’ll have to just see for yourself. Personally, I loved them. I am a fan of bright colors and, come on, it’s Oregon. They can get away with just about anything and it would look cool.
Heisman Watch
At this time a year ago nobody knew RG3, so this should all be taken with a grain of salt, but here is what some of the Heisman frontrunners did in week one:
Matt Barkley (USC): 23-38, 372 yards, 3 TD
Montee Ball (Wisconsin): 32 carries, 120 yards, 1 TD
Landry Jones (Oklahoma): 21-36, 222 yards, 2 TD
Le’Veon Bell (Michigan St.): 44 carries, 210 yards, 2TD
If I had to pick my preseason Heisman winner at this point it would have to be Matt Barkley. If he stays healthy, he is virtually guaranteed to put up gaudy numbers each game. He has the weapons on the outside and the smarts to play consistent enough over the course of the year.
Bonehead play of the week
If you haven’t seen this by now, here it is.
It’s bad enough that one guy ran the wrong way, but what is everyone else on the field doing?!? The dude’s teammates are blocking for him (while he’s going the wrong way) and the Towson players shouldn’t have tackled him! It would have been a safety. C’mon men!!!!
