Lets face it, there’s more to college then textbooks and lecture halls. The best part of the college experience is meeting new people and finding that core group of friends that will ride or die with you throughout these four memorable years. A lot of people make the assumption that move-in day and the first day of classes are the only times to meet new people, but that’s far from the truth.
If you miss your “one chance” on the first day of school, the day is over and all of a sudden you’re sitting in your room wondering why you haven’t met anyone outside of your roommate. No need to end up in that situation because the best way to meet people is to get to know other incoming freshman beforeschool starts. Here are a few ways to make sure you’re not hiding in your room once the semester begins:
1.) Where you livin’?
Checkout your assignment letter, and contact your roomie. This is the person you’ll probably spend the most time with for the next year so don’t be shy. It’s a great way to form a bond before move in day. Also, look on your assignment letter and use Facebook to connect with people living in the same residential hall as you, so you can get acquainted with your neighbors too!
2.) Facebook is your new best friend!
Become a member of your university’s “group” page. On that page, Facebook allows you to become a member of your class page. Once you join, you can easily connect with other incoming freshman.
3.) Freshmen don’t bite
All freshmen are created equal! In saying that, I mean all incoming freshman have the same goal. They want to be social and they want to meet people, so don’t be afraid to add people from your college class page on Facebook. Also, don’t be afraid to accept a friend request from people adding you either, embrace that connection and build on it.
4.) There is no such thing as a stupid question
Post on the wall of your class page. Something as simple as, “did anyone see that new Spiderman movie? Heard it was crazyyy!” can spark a conversation and connect you to other movie lovers and people with similar interests within your school class.
5.) Be the one to break the ice
Create a Facebook event and invite the people from your class page that are close to where you live, and invite them to a pizza parlor or nearby coffee shop for a “meet and greet.” It shows that you’re interested in getting to know these people past just being Facebook friends.
