Fashionistas and style gurus rejoice! This year’s Emmys Award Show brought out the best and worst in TV celebrities’ wardrobes, which is great because drooling over dazzling dresses can be just as much as dishing shade on them. Here are the fashion no’s and go’s of Sunday night.
1. Lucy Liu
I like shiny. But that’s not the only reason this dress made the number one spot. Lucy looked damn fabulous in her stunningly silver Versace gown at the Emmy Awards. The hints of red picked up in the steel mail made it seem like Liu was wearing the red carpet itself. The Elementary actress scores high, and to me, she will always be Oren Ishii, and the armor is all too fitting.
2. Kiernan Shipka
This 12-year-old actress is styled way beyond her years. Not only is her dress beautiful, it’s age appropriate too. The sleek dress is svelte without being form fitting which is laudable on a youthful frame. This Zac Posen dress is reminiscent of Gareth Pugh’s Spring 2011 collection which was flawless btw.
3. Sofia Vergara
One word. Mermaid. This is the gown Ariel should have worn when she got her legs. Her Zuhad Muhair gown sparkled and glittered, but apparently wasn’t the most functional. After her win, Vergara tweeted this picture exposing a broken zipper and everything underneath… I don’t hate it.
4 Heidi Klum
In Fashion, one day you’re in and the next, you’re out. Heidi is definitely in with her seafoam goddess gown. Her plunging neckline and high slit leaves little to the imagination, and her tan Scandinavian skin looks brilliant against her mint garment by Alexandre Vauthier
5 January Jones
January Jones wore a gothic black gown by Zac Posen. Though the dress is voluminous and sexy, Jones’ makeup and styling were what really pulled the look together. It’s refreshing to see Betty Draper in a modern show stopper.
The Worst
1. Zooey Deschanel
Yikes. I love toile, but Zooey Deschanel over did it with this Cinderella wannabe gown by Reem Acra. Not gonna lie, the bodice of the dress is cute, but the gown slowly turned into a mess of blue tissue. I know Zooey’s trademark is quirky, so lets just be thankful she didn’t show up in a swan dress.
2. Hayden Panetierre
This Marchesa gown is giving a stunning Grecian realness. But like… Hayden: You look like a maypole. This is one of those moments when you need to look in the mirror and realize you're trying too hard.
3. Ashley Judd
Dios mio, since when do the Emmys call for a hideous quinceanera dress. Judd's magenta Carolina Herrera looked like a prom queen runner up who should have been under the pail of pigs blood instead of Carrie. From the up-do down this outfit was a flop. Come on Ashley, don't celebs pay stylists for this kind of thing?
4. Lena Dunham
Maybe she wore this high neck conservative Prada gown to combat the criticism of her nomination being awarded solely on her nudity throughout Girls. She was naked in literally every episode. I love that Lena Dunham picked a dress that really mirrors her personality, but it's quite tragic. There's no movement or accent to this dress that starkly resembles a blue doily that could be repurposed as the inlay for a coffin. On the plus side, Lena's makeup and hair are rad.
5. Julianne Moore
I adore Julianne, but I'd betray bias if I DIDN'T plop her down on the absolute bottom of the list. Less of a dollop of sunshine, more like an egg drop soup, this Christian Dior gown is a miss. How many Big Birds died to make this gown? I've never seen something so yellow look so sad. But hey, who cares? Julianne took home an Emmy, and in the end, that's the only thing that makes it to the Wikipedia page anyway, right?
