Every September, fashionistas flock to the streets of New York City to see what the best American designers have in store for the following season. For those of you who don’t follow the fashion regularly, it is always the opposite season. So, for instance, this fall the designers are showing for spring 2011. For one week, fashion insiders, editors, bloggers and celebrities come together to see the collections designers have been slaving over since February. They come to see which designers have the best and the worst collections, and what is going to be in style for next season.
This year, fashion week has been moved from famed Bryant Park to Lincoln Center. Cheryl Wischhover, a blogger for Fashionista.com, described the venue as “spectacular. [She] actually got chills as [she] walked into the huge plaza and saw the fountain.” I am sad that I will not be there to see the tents and venues that will be used for the runway shows, but it is encouraging to hear that the new venue is living up to its hype.
As fashion week started yesterday, I can’t say yet which shows I loved the most, but I am very excited for the 3.1 Phillip Lim show as well as Alexander Wang, Nina Ricci, and one of America’s most renowned and loved designers, Michael Kors. However, one of the greatest things about fashion week are not only the big names, but the smaller upcoming designers like Suno, who uses African tribal fabric to create his funky and chic collection. Or Wes Gordon, who studied at Central St. Martins in England, one of, if not the most, prestigious design institutes in the world (some other alums are Alexander McQueen and Zac Posen), and who coincidently went to my high school. His fall 2010 collection was a hit, and he has been profiled by Vogue, which pretty much speaks for itself.
With fall in the air, and the fashion world abuzz, get ready for some great clothes both on and off the runway.
