In 2007, Nelly Furtado received $1 million to perform for the Gaddafi family in Italy with other singers, including Mariah Carey, Usher, and Beyonce. Furtado’s concert for Gaddafi only lasted forty-five minutes, an incredibly short period of time to receive such a large sum of money. Recently, however, Furtado stated that she will be donating all the money to an undecided charity.
Furtado’s choice is a response to the recent events that have transpired in Egypt. In an interview with Rap-Up.com, she said that she felt the money was “blood money” and no longer wanted to be associated with it. It is unclear what the other celebrities who have performed for Gaddafi have decided or will decide to do with their payment.
