As a major print-lover, you can imagine my delight when polka dots came back onto the scene. They’re incredibly chic and polished, with no sign of Minnie Mouse or those childish prints of yesteryear in sight. There’s nothing tired or “been-there-done-that” about the latest resurgence of polka dots – it’s as if we’ve never seen them before, and they’re among the easiest ways to add some femininity to your fall wardrobe.
It goes without saying that this is not your opportunity to pull out your favorite pink polka-dotted sweater from middle school or pick up a vintage dress covered in saucer-sized spots. To nail the look seen on the Gucci and Marc Jacobs fall runways, you need to stick to a neutral color palette of black, navy, and cream. Likewise, keep the dots small and evenly spaced. Modern shapes keep polka dots from looking overly prim or grandma-chic – drapey tees, cigarette pants, A-line blouses and even flirty swimsuits are perfect for the inherently classic trend.
And of course an article about a print is going to bring up the concept of mixed prints. It just so happens polka dots are utterly perfect for mixing with other patterns; stripes in a complementary color palette are the obvious choice, but even leopard looks fresh and unexpected with polka dots. (Leopard is essentially the feline version of polka dots, so it works, right? Right. It more than works.) Similarly, neutral polka dot pieces like the ones pictured {below} look fabulous worn with brighter, statement-making colors like coral pants or a yellow mini-skirt. Not much else is needed with such a well-planned outfit; the polka dots add just the right amount of interest.
