The new trailer for Sofia Coppola’s upcoming movie “The Bling Ring” looks pretty amazing. But evidently, not everyone’s excited about it.
Alexis Neiers, a real life Bling Ring member who Emma Watson’s character, Nicki, is based on calls the new trailer “trashy and inaccurate” and says that she does not intend on seeing the film.
Neiers served four weeks behind bars for breaking into the homes of celebrities including Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom and Paris Hilton.
The 21-year-old starred in E! Channel’s reality TV show “Pretty Wild," which initially followed her life as a socialite in Hollywood but ended up featuring the Bling Ring case.
The new trailer highlights teenage obsession over celebrities. At one point, Emma Watson’s character whines to her friends, “let’s go to Paris’. I wanna rob.”
In an interview with GQ, Emma Watson said that she hated her character. “The character is everything that I felt strongly against,” Watson said. “She’s superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral.”
Neiers’ character is obviously not depicted positively (many would argue deservedly so). Her criticism was a response to a tweet from LA Times journalist, Amy Kaufman. She mainly criticized Nancy Jo Sales, the journalist who wrote a story on the Bling Ring for Vanity Fair in 2010 calling her ’irresponsible, inaccurate and dishonest’.
On one episode of “Pretty Wild”, Neiers is seen sobbing as she leaves a voicemail for Sales after reading the Vanity Fair article:
“I’m calling to let you know how disappointed I am in your story and the light that you shed on me, when I am going through such a hard time in my life. I opened up to you so that way the world could potentially know what a great, amazing, talented, strong, healthy girl that I am – not even a girl, a young woman.”
Neiers was also upset because Sales wrote that she wore six-inch Louboutins when in fact she wore four-inch brown Bebe shoes (for $29!). Does she really expect anyone to take her seriously?
