You may be surprised to hear this: I don’t like sports. (Pause for reaction…) Admittedly, fashion is my game; ESPN and Sports Illustrated don’t really fit into my busy schedule of mall trekking, bargain hunting, vintage digging, and blog reading. I know, I know; life is hard.
As a result, my collection of athletic gear is limited, but I’m starting to reconsider after noticing the sporty chic trend that’s popping up in every store. We first saw the trend take shape on the Alexander Wang Spring 2012 runway – graphic patterns, laser-cut mesh, slick fabrics, and oversized bombers left us intrigued by the cool athletic vibe. What seemed novel and far-off at first is now much more accessible, and it’s time your wardrobe took note.
But I don’t mean track pants and running shoes; don’t think so literally. Instead, incorporate the fundamental elements of athletic clothing into your day wear – bold colors, graphic stripes, rubber, vinyl, and clean edges are simple and sleek- and thus easy-as-pie to wear with everything in your closet. Just be sure not to go head-to-toe sporty or you’ll end up looking like Workout Barbie. Try chunky striped wedges with a clean, feminine shift dress, or a pair of metallic kicks with your everyday skinny jeans (never, ever forget the kicks). Sporty accessories are even easier to style: an orange rubber clutch or chunky enamel bangles lend a graphic edge to any outfit. You’ll look ultra chic, a little bit sporty and totally fashion-forward.
