10. Psychopathology
If you’re a soon-to-be or an aspiring psychology major, this class will be for you. With this course, you’ll end up with knowledge of various mental disorders. Some topics you’ll be covering include mood disorders, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders. In Psychopathology, you’ll be familiar with the term DSM-IV Axis I which consists of mental and substance use disorders. This class would only be for psychology majors so if you’re a psychology student, make sure to look into this!
“I thought it was really interesting because it took you through the different clusters of disorders how to diagnose them and what their symptoms were. I thought this was interesting cause it pertained to my major.” Adelphi University sophomore Aani Mehtani said.
The class being taught by Dr. Webb Garrison gives such an interesting insight into the world of psychology. By honing your psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral skills, you’ll better understand the structure of psychopathology. By learning both past and recent research, you’ll be better equipped in your future profession. This class will make you critically think about how the study of psychopathology may be seen in your own interest in research. For the psychology nerds, this class would be a dream.
9. First-Year Seminar: Building A Culture of Empathy
Are you an incoming first-year at Adelphi? Well, look no further than this first-year class. First-Year Seminar: Building A Culture of Empathy, a sociology class that will leave you with an unforgettable experience. Being a first-time college student can be scary and this class will be centered around making you comfortable. The class is made for first-year students to learn about non-violent communication skills that will help you learn more about yourself and others.
“We would always start each class by saying how we are feeling today and what we are in need of. It was such a safe and comfortable environment, especially because Dr. Jessica Klein made the atmosphere healing and inviting. She has such a wonderful presence and it made me take another class with her again in my second semester as a junior,” Adelphi University Junior Alana Bernstein said.
During this seminar, you’ll learn the importance of being kind to yourself. The class’s whole purpose centers around you making long-lasting connections with your classmates. By taking this class, you’ll have a whole different perspective on the people around you and about yourself. Dr. Klein makes the setting more engaging and impactful with her lectures. You’re sure to never forget this class.
8. Human Condition 1
Serving as a requirement for the honors college, Human Condition 1 has knowledge for everyone. If you’re big on literature (like myself) then you’ll love the various literary works that were concocted from all around the world. Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Plato, and Aristotle will be your favorites by the end of this course. Not only that, but through class discussions, your speaking skills will improve as well. This class will be the perfect fit for art and music lovers alike.
“We read books such as “The Tale of the Heike”, “the Shahnameh”, and “the Aeneid”. All of these works took place during different periods but showed the class the stark similarities between different cultures,” Adelphi University sophomore Julia Ramsaroop said.
Professor Preston-Matto does an amazing job of pushing students to get creative. She does this by implementing unique prompts that spark students’ creativity. By examining literature, you get to view the world in a way you haven’t imagined before. By looking at all these different cultures, students will have the ability to broaden their horizons. Through the artistic works of some of the greatest minds, students will leave this class knowing more about the human condition.
7. Black Writers 1
As an introduction to Black American Literature, this course is vital when it comes to literature. Students get to study how 20th-century Black American writers were influenced by their heritage. By learning about the harsh world of slavery, students get to see how that was significant to Black literature. An impactful course taught by Professor Lespinasse, students get to examine African American and Caribbean literature and see how some of the effects of the past relate to the present world. You’ll get to learn about the stories of well-known Black writers (ex W.E.B Du Bois and Frederick Douglass) and their impact on Black literature.
6. Television Studio Production 1
Always had an eye for the television biz? Then this class would be perfect for you. Television Studio Production 1 gets students involved in the technical part of the television studio production. This would include writing, casting, directing, and camera work. The class works in a group in order to achieve this. Students get to gain hands-on experience as well as bonding with their classmates!
5. History Of Jazz Before 1950
Who doesn’t love jazz? Not only does this class fulfill the art requirement, but students will learn the various jazz styles and trends that happened before the 1950s. Working your way through Harlem stride piano and then going to Bebop 1940s. You’ll also get to look at historical figures of this jazz period. Not only will students leave with a core memory, but also an appreciation of Jazz music.
4. Fairy Tales and Folklore As Literature
Who doesn’t love learning about fairy tales and folklore? It’s probably a staple of our childhoods. These tales will be examined by students to see how they were used to reflect current human behaviors in both the past and present. Students will study how the growth of folklore and fairy tales from oral tradition to publication. You’ll look at the setting, characters and plot of these stories in order to better understand the deeper meaning.
3. Performing Stand-Up Comedy
Have that desire to make people laugh? Well, look no further than the Performing Stand-Up Comedy class. Open to all majors in order for you to hone your skills with a professional. You’ll learn how to get a feel of your comedy skills in both writing and verbal form. By creating a routine, you’ll end up performing it at a comedy club in New York City.
“My favorite memory from the class was our final performance at the comedy club. Rainy night at the city, the amount of support we showed for each other was the highlight of the day. The epitome of chill & we all hung out and told our stories while having each others backs in front of strangers,” Adelphi University freshman Gaby Bernier said.
Not only will you get in touch with your funny side, but you’ll also get to meet Professor Lauren’s emotional support dog. By the end of this course, you’ll be more comfortable with yourself. Your classmate’s support will make sure you’re ready to take the stage. You’ll think back and laugh at this experience. Who knows? Maybe you’ll end up as the next Jim Carrey.
2. From Turntables to Tupac: The American Hip Hop Phenomenon
This class will be a must for Hip-Hop lovers. This course will go through the developments that are related to Hip-Hop in America. You’ll see the evolution of Hip-Hop from the 1970s, to now. Students will learn about the fast-paced musical trends that made these genres successful. You’ll learn the music in context with social awareness and racial inequality.
1. Gothic and Horror Literature
A horror lover’s dream class. The class focuses on the study of scary stories and how literature is used to portray a human’s anxieties. You’ll read some of the classics like “Frankenstein”, “Wuthering Heights” and “Dracula.” Not only will you be able to identify the different elements of the Gothic and horror genre, but you’ll also learn about recurring themes. If you love horror and history, then this class will be the right fit for you.
