A Canadian artist with an Americana soul, Chad Kichula and the Douglas Avenue Garage Band combines sounds that resemble the music of everyone from Springsteen to The Black Keys, much to the liking of their ever growing fan base. The veteran singer discussed with us how his perspective has changed throughout his music journey, “I don’t feel like I’m pursuing a career within the ‘industry.' Maybe there was a time I wanted and tried for that, but now I just appreciate the love of writing and preforming music.”
And don’t expect Kichula to start mirroring the sounds of his mainstream peers anytime soon. Instead of gathering his inspiration from well-known artists of today’s top 50 countdowns, he reaches his listeners through writing about his immediate surroundings–his neighborhood, work, town and “anyone trying to get a piece of that pie.”
Throughout a roller coaster ride of demos, recording contracts, and trying to make ends meet while pursuing the dream, Kichula talked about how his sounds has remained essentially unaffected, yet his ever changing lifestyle gave him a unique perspective on music as a whole, which also helped in him finding his own unconfined sound.
“For me, I produce music that might be too country for pop fans and too rock for country, and that’s fine with me…The way I see it, there is so much music that isn’t being experience because its been categorized.”
A self-made songwriter, Kichula and the Douglas Avenue Garage Band have defeated the notoriously narrow-minded world of popular music, and with their upcoming album release, things are really starting to pick up for the group that describe their music as “blue-collar, two fisted, rock” with a hefty American twang.
The songs on the newest album, "A Fire," range from the catchy and relatable “Save My Life” to the soulful and harmonic “Reason to Believe.” His favorite song on the new album, Kichula says, is "Calm Before the Storm." "I wrote that one after my dog and friend of 15 years passed away last summer. I think the guitars came together really nice, and the trippy reverb is really cool."
Kichula celerated the release of his album in May at a sold-out party at Aria Resort & Casino's Deuce Lounge.
