College Magazine’s 50by2050 campaign, an initiative to make Congress 50% women by 2050, partners with IGNITE and Running Start to give young women the resources they need to get their name on the ballot—and then win. IGNITE’s training program teaches young women about policy and how to enact positive change through elected office while connecting them with current women leaders. Running Start brings training and mentorship to young women passionate about a career in politics. Their programs teach girls and young women how to take active leadership roles so they gain the skills and confidence to lead in the political sphere.
Young Woman Run is a two-day political leadership-training event geared towards college women like you. After two days, you and your politically ambitious peers will have the skills and resources you need to get involved in politics, whether it’s working in the government or running for office yourself.
The keynote speakers alone will give you major #girlboss vibes. Get inspired by speaker Nancy Pelosi, our Minority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives. You’ll also hear from Rosie Rios, the 43rd U.S. Treasurer who led the efforts to place a woman like Harriet Tubman on U.S. currency. Other speakers include attorney and activist Christine Pelosi and entrepreneur Jess Weiner, whose work on body inclusivity and female empowerment led to collaborations with Barbie and Dove’s Real Women campaign.
Participants can attend two plenary sessions: Young and Running or Supporting Your Political Journey Through Life. The Young and Running session’s speakers include D.C. City Councilor Brianne Nadeau, Howard University’s Student Body President Allyson Carpenter and Illinois State Representative Avery Bourne. In the Supporting Your Political Journey Through Life session, you’ll hear from She Should Run’s Co-Founder & CEO Erin Loos Cutraro, Higher Height’s Co-Founder Kimberly Peeler-Allen and Empowered Women’s Founder & President Mindy Finn.
If you want to hold public office in the future, take detailed notes at the event’s workshop sessions. If you don’t even know where to begin, the Campaign 101 session will get you started. Or head straight to the session Fundraising Without Fear to learn how to land donors. Develop an Authentic Personal Campaign Message will teach you how to communicate with your potential constituents. By the end of the workshops, you’ll probably learn how to run a better campaign than some of our current politicians. Oh snap.
Aside from the leadership event, the winner will sharpen her networking skills by attending a congressional reception. Not only will you meet with politicians, but you will also meet with people on their team. Be sure to make an impression whether you want to go into communications or finance—these pros know how to get you to better places in your public or private sector career.
If all that sounded like a dream come true to you, then take a seat for the best part of all. Aside from the Young Women Run ticket and congressional reception, the winner gets to sit down for a cup of coffee with a Congresswoman. She can answer your burning questions about being a woman in the political sphere. The connection you forge with the Congresswoman can lead to amazing opportunities like a mentor, internship or job. Who knows, this Congresswoman might even endorse you while you’re running for office.
